Briefly about Zakynthos Airport Greece

Zakynthos International Airport, otherwise known as Dionysios Solomos Airport, is an airport in Zakynthos in Greece. The airport is located close to the town of Kalamaki, and no planes are permitted to land or depart during the night. The airport is roughly 20 minutes from the capital of Zakynthos town and other seaside tourist destinations such as Lagana, Tsilivi and Kalamaki. The airport is situated on the south east coat of the island, 1km from the resort of Laganas and can be very busy on certain days of the week during the holiday period. The airport is fully equipped with modern infrastructure and welcomes many visitors every year. Zakynthos Dionysios Solomos Airport receives domestic flights from Athens and some charters from European cities, especially the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, it has been built in an area where the endangered sea turtle goes to lay her eggs so it is a constant threat to the survival of this animal. Regular public buses and taxis link the airport to Zakynthos town and other resorts. The taxi rank is available in front of the airport. Tourists can rent a car at Zakynthos Airport. A lot of hotels and apartments for rent also offer mini buses or private cars for the transportation of their clients. In 2008 a brand new airport was opened to replace the smaller older one, which was struggling to cope with the increasing arrivals and departures. The airport has greatly improved due to the spacious new arrivals and departure areas making the whole process of passengers much quicker and efficient. Night flights are banned on Zakynthos, so as not to disturb the endangered Caretta Caretta turtles which nest their eggs on the beaches of Zante. As night flights are banned, it means that the hours for planes to arrive and depart are severely restricted. There can be congestion at times due to planes having to land close together.
